HIGHER EDUCATION

Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana
Re.D., Major: Recreation and Park Administration; Minor: Public Administration

Strong emphasis in management of personal, programs and facilities focusing on policies, procedures and operational strategies utilized in the development, implementation and evaluation of various recreation services to broad based clientele groups. Course work examined the social, psychological, economic and political motivations of recreation toward the individual and society as a whole. Teaching assistantship: Camp Counseling and graduate assistantship: State of Indiana Department of Health. (Major responsibilities: to visit all communities south of Indianapolis and identify the kinds of recreation experiences being provided for the persons living in these communities: including public recreation, commercial recreation, school recreation, private recreation, non-profit recreation and church recreation. After completing the review, we projected the recreation needs of southern Indiana for the next 10 years including staff, programs, and facilities.

West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia
M.S. Recreation Administration

The content of the Master's Degree was an emphasis in public sector recreation management as it relates to public service and natural resource management. Received a graduate assistantship. (Major responsibilities to travel throughout the state of West Virginia with the Chair of the Department examining the recreation programs being provided for persons living in small communities subsidized by the West Virginia coal mining companies. These programs involved elementary through high school students. The schools often were the only available facilities for the majority of recreation experiences provided for children and youth throughout the year. We met with recreation, school and DNR staff discussing changes to improve quality of recreation services).

Waynesburg College, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania
B.S. Major: Biology; Minor: Mathematics

The degree included a strong emphasis in the biological sciences, chemistry, physics and mathematics. During the summers I worked in my hometown of Washington D.C. for the D.C. Recreation Department as a leader in a natural resources program. These programmatic experiences involved numerous contacts with different ethic and racial groups that elevated my understanding of differences and similarities among groups.

After graduating from Waynesburg College, applied and was accepted for a full time position in the D.C. Recreation Department for three and a half years. The major responsibilities: Director of Day Camps, (staff of 90), hired, fired, established policy and program procedures with staff; developed and implemented appearances on radio and television, interacted with children and adults, developed and implemented budget and provided a final report. This was a seven-month position. For five months my position was identified as a misassignment, meaning I could be assigned where needed as decided by my supervisors. Majority of time worked at recreation centers. The learning experiences were invaluable from a personal perspective and often utilized as case studies and class topics.
